Nolen began his guitar journey with instruction from a high school art teacher at 15 and a year later he started his own music style. His musical ventures started with jazz by Michael Franks. However, the first album that resonated for him was Pink Moon by Nick Drake. The compelling tones lead him into the folk genre. He is also inspired by the ethereal Angelo De Augustine and Sun Kil Moon. With these influences he has developed his own unique style. From the producer, When reasonably scruffy 18-year-old Nolen Selwood showed up at my studio in early 2021 he didn't have a case for one of the two guitars he was carrying. This initial meeting was for me to hear what the young man had to offer as he wanted to make a short "indie" album (His words). After having the then slightly nervous young man play one song, I asked to hear everything he had. It was apparent to me we weren't going to make a short "indie" album, and this was no usual 18-year-old man with an acoustic guitar and lyrics. To my further amazement upon an inquiry as to his influences he told me his main one was Nick Drake! How a 18-year-old from Prior Lake Minnesota managed to channel that type of creativity and make it his own widened my eyes quite a bit. Fast forward one year and his first full length recording is complete with more coming. Again, this is no ordinary guy with an acoustic guitar and lyric's....
