She was born Clara Ann Fowler on November 8, 1927, in Claremore, Oklahoma. Her first career choice was to be an artist - she could sing, but showed little interest. Then, aged 18, she enquired at her local radio station, KTUL in Tulsa, about working for them. KTUL needed a singer to replace their resident 'Patti Page' on a show sponsored by the Page Milk Company. She got the job and a new name. Band leader and manager Jack Rael tuned into KTUL, heard Patti and signed her. She began touring with his band. They were in Chicago when the local record company Mercury signed her to a four track deal. One of those songs, Confess, reached number 12 on the national Hit Parade in February 1948. The same year Mitch Miller joined Mercury as head of A&R. It was a key career development. She rarely looked back. Here are the early hits - from an era when melody, diction and musicianship were expected. And with songs like I Don't Care if the Sun Don't Shine and Tennessee Waltz she shows how her influence stretched well into the Rock 'n' Roll era.
