Over a span of twenty years, 16th-century Portuguese explorer Fernao Mendes Pinto lived a life of unparalleled adventure while traveling across the continent of Asia as a soldier, merchant, diplomat, pirate, and missionary. Shipwrecked and taken prisoner numerous times, he was one of the first Europeans to visit Japan and was even sentenced to a year of hard labor on the Great Wall of China. Adapted from his posthumously published memoirs and featuring songs from folk musician Fausto Bordalo Dias, this newly remastered sea-faring epic from acclaimed director Joao Botelho was Portugal's Official Entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.

Press Quotes

An equally ambiguous and artificial film object in three chapters, which combines literary storytelling, imagined family stories, theatre-driven performances and musical sequences.

     —Vitor Pinto, Cineuropa

Exotic, gorgeous and often brutal. Highly Recommended/

     —I. Slifkin, The Sound View

The kind of movie one fears is going out of style forever. A historical action drama, serious in tone and intent but also invested in delivering movie-movie thrills.

     —RogerEbert.com

'The costuming, casting, locations, and set dressing come together to create an epic. Highly Recommended

     —J. Zimmerman, The Sound View
