Raised in the musical city that is Detroit, it was perhaps only natural that Robert Cunningham Jr. would become a musician. Mentored by members of the legendary session group, the Funk Brothers, Cunningham became an important part of the cities recording and jam sessions, his mix of traditional and smooth jazz gaining a vibrant soulful edge in the process. Long in the making and the result of years of studio experimentation, Deep Within, is Cunningham's brilliant debut album, showcasing his lyrical saxophone work. The eight tracks included are built on a lifetime of performing, paying dues and perfecting his craft. The new release spotlights Cunningham's top flight originals, including the lead track, "Asianese," a duet with saxophonist Pamela Williams, but it also includes covers of early influence, Stevie Wonder, as well as the more contemporary, Sade. The album will please traditionalists as well as those who like a bit of groove in their tunes. Cunningham's saxophone converses with the listener, his instrumental prowess giving the melodies in his riffs and passages a unique voice, particularly evident on songs such as "Getting Ahead of Things." The track also includes dreamy vocals and adds elements of funk to his steamy saxophone work. It's that melding of beat and melody that make Deep Within, a compelling listen. High points on the album also include the Latin rhythm infused take of Wonder's "Rocket Love," and the soulful strut of "Body Language," but which ever track you take in first, Cunningham's music will hit the right marks, the perfect soundtrack to any jazz fans night (or day).
