Rumble. As a sinister portent of all that parents in the 1950s feared, Rumble in particular and Rockabilly in general could hardly have been better judged. Banned all over the US, it's almost comic now to observe that Rumble's an instrumental. Through the late 1940s and early 1950s, radio stations serving the black community had been blasting the airwaves with Blues, R&B and Soul. The surprise was not that white kids had found this material - it was that they took so long. The perpetrators of Rockabilly welded the Country music they knew to the vital sounds they heard on the radio. The movement's leaders may have been centered in Tennessee, but neighbor Virginia was not far behind. Here are the lauded and the lost. The Dazzlers, Trailblazers and the Down Beats flourished briefly and then burned out. Others, like Link Wray and Roy Clark established themselves as part of the musical establishment. Whatever the case, here's music that - after more than fifty years still delivers youthful energy.
