That liturgical music has not been neglecred by a younger generrdon of composers is evident from the disc Hungarian Contemporary Vespers. Those two sequences featured here, moreover, are subdy contrasted as to content and aesthetic. Thns the S'undalt Vespers by Zsok Serei (&1954) remains audibly faithftil to its medieval sources by interspersing plainsong with settings whose allegiance to tradition is continually yet restrainedly underlined. On the other hand, Wsperae per annum by P6ter Zombola (r1983) is a longer and more elaborate serwice that ranges freely over the ancient a:rd modern of sacred choral music, its often dense textures offset by bells and a frequendy hypnotic organ part. The performances by Schola Cantorunr Budapestiensis. as directed by Tamds Bubn6 and Jdnos Mezei, leave nothing to be desired.
