Rock & Roll from Nashville'..of course. Drag racing songs'...why not' Twist records'..why do you think they call it Music City' But surfing music'......from Nashville' Well, it's really not as strange as you might think. The kingpins of the 1960s Tennessee surf world were Bobby Russell, Bergen White and Buzz Cason, and all had serious Surf Music credentials. Bobby and Buzz met in their hometown of Nashville in 1958 at the Fidelity recording studio. Bobby had a few songs published and Buzz was a successful Rock & Roller with the group The Casuals, and a fledgling songwriter as well. They hit it off and began co-writing. In 1960 they wrote the song "Tennessee" that was recorded by The Todds, who were actually Bobby, Buzz & Bergen White. But it was the cover version by Jan & Dean the following year that put Bobby and Buzz on the map as songwriters. The song was a big hit on the West Coast and a modest hit nationwide. It also brought them to the attention of Liberty Records in Los Angeles, the label Jan & Dean recorded for. Bobby and Buzz also wrote and released "Popsicle" (again as The Todds) in 1962. The record was recorded by Jan & Dean in 1963, but not released until 1966 when it became a huge hit.
