Press Quotes

Bela Szakcsi Lakatos is a key figure in Hungarian jazz and his playing is steeped in the percussive dissonance of Béla Bartok and the heart-on-sleeve emotions of the gypsy folklore he has made a detailed study of. His solos rumble and crash into Cecil Taylor territory, spin off into florid lines and there's a strong hint of McCoy Tyner - it's all there in the unaccompanied introduction on the first track. But he swings like the clappers, and his accompaniment is spot on: spacious, rhythmic and somewhat quirky. This CD, recorded in 2008, captures him at the Budapest Palace of Fine Arts celebrating his 65th birthday in the fast company of saxophonist Chris Potter and bass and drum heavyweights Reginald Veal and Tani Lyne Carrington. They are billed as an equal-partners quartet, and, with tricky themes, long solos and a great sense of dynamics, this is exactly how they come across. The four Szakcsi originals feature twisty themes and stabbed chords, unison lines and end of chorus riffs, Keith Jarrett's 'Rainbow' is lilting and light, and there's a moving version of 'Round About Midnight'. Potter plays his socks off, Carrington is on fire and there's a great sense of camaraderie. The only downside is the slightly twangy sound on Reginald Veal's bass.

     —Mike Hobart, Jazzwise, November 2013

Lakatos has a very original style and he is never overshadowed by his famous sidemen, often inspiring them to play at their most intense and inventive.
