That Girl in Yellow Boots encapsulates a young woman's intricate quest to find her birth parents in India. Britain-based Ruth Edscer (Kalki Koechlin) began researching her family history after the passing of her mother and suicide of her 15-year old sister, She sets out for Mumbai to locate her father, whose name, she discovered, is Arjun Patel. She finds employment at a massage parlor, where she not only does she earn a wage, but charges 1000 rupees for shady behavior with affluent male clients. Ruth delves into these whiles to bide time and find the perfect way to find family members and answers. She cannot be hired unless and until she is granted an official work permit, so frequents the Foreigners Registration Office to extend her stay, while acclimating to the culture and “donations.” Challenges follow, after a confrontation with a gangster, Chittiappa Gowda, who not only assaults her but steals her savings, as her boyfriend, Prashant, is in debt with Chittiappa. While tracing her family tree and getting even with Prashant, she finds out that her father had changed his name, is now known as Benjamin, and likely resides in a building called Versova. Ruth locates this building, but her journey provides her with shock, upon learning who her father really is.
