In 1970, young first-time director Dario Argento (Deep Red, Suspiria) made his indelible mark on Italian cinema with The Bird with the Crystal Plumage - a film which redefined the 'giallo' genre of murder-mystery thrillers and catapulted him to international stardom. Sam Dalmas (Tony Musante, We Own the Night), an American writer living in Rome, inadvertently witnesses a brutal attack on a woman (Eva Renzi, Funeral in Berlin) in a modern art gallery. Powerless to help, he grows increasingly obsessed with the incident. Convinced that something he saw that night holds the key to identifying the maniac terrorizing Rome, he launches his own investigation parallel to that of the police, heedless of the danger to both himself and his girlfriend Giulia (Suzy Kendall, Spasmo)... A staggeringly assured debut, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage establishes the key traits that would define Argento's filmography, including lavish visuals and a flare for wildly inventive, brutal scenes of violence. With sumptuous cinematography by Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now) and a seductive score by legendary composer Ennio Morricone (Once Upon a Time in the West), this landmark film has never looked or sounded better in this brand new 4K Ultra HD presentation from Arrow Video!

Press Quotes

[It] has the energy to support its elaborateness and the decency to display its devices with style

—Vincent Canby, The New York Times

What thrillers are all about

     —Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Future Oscar winner Vittorio Storaro shot the film-it was his first color film and he makes it a showpiece-and Ennio Morricone provides an unusual, often eerie score arranged for human voices.

     —Sean Axmaker, Stream on Demand

A smart, cosmopolitan, thoroughly modern whodunit comprised of geometric visuals and pulsating sexual violence

     —Jamie Graham, Total Film

A heart-stopping horror melodrama with excellent acting from all involved

     —TV Guide

Improving upon what was already one of Arrow's best Blu-rays, this UHD presentation is quite possibly the label's best 4K release to date. The sharp clarity really brings the geometrical precision home in all its glory.

—Chuck Bowen and Jake Cole, Slant

Arrow has been establishing itself rather easily as a quality purveyor of 4K UHD product, and this new release of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage should further burnish their reputation. Technical merits are solid, and as usual with an Arrow release, th

     —Blu-ray.com

One of Argento's finest films... Arrow Video's UHD debut offers a robust presentation of the film in a handsome package that any self-respecting Italian genre fans must have on their shelf. Highly recommended.

     —The Digital Bits

You can see the kind of care and attention put into the 4K presentation... The best the film has ever looked and sounded. Run to pick this release up before it sells out, as I doubt we're going to see Argento's work and this film ever look this good again

     —Edge Media Network

A cinematic work of art and a standout effort in the giallo subgenre. If you're a fan of this flick, this is sure to be considered the gold standard. I'd strongly suggest picking (it) up while you can. 5 out of 5 stars!

     —Dread Central

The best it's ever looked, the picture quality here is exceptional. As a box set it's got everything you could want.
