THE NORTH AMERICAN BLU-RAY PREMIERES

Pere Portabella has been a pioneering movie producer and celebrated Spanish statesman, denounced by both the Franco dictatorship and The Vatican. But it's his subversive work as a director that has rewritten the rules of genre narrative. Or as The Museum of Modern Art says, "The films of Portabella expand the expressive potential of cinema": In 1970, Portabella was invited by Jess Franco to make a behind-the-scenes documentary on the filming of COUNT DRACULA. Instead, VAMPIR-CUADECUC became a dreamlike deconstruction of myths, monsters and moviemaking featuring Christopher Lee, Herbert Lom and Soledad Miranda as you've never seen them before. Christopher Lee also stars in Portabella's companion piece UMBRACLE, an unsettling journey through dread, violence and discontinuity with Lee at his most candid. Both films are now scanned in HD from Portabella's own vault elements for the first time ever in America.

    Press Quotes

The films of Pere Portabella expand the expressive potential of cinema.

         —The Museum of Modern Art

Portabella merits a wider audience... VAMPIR-CUADECUC is among the most highly regarded avant-garde films of the past half century, so distinctly worth seeing as to be almost mandatory.

         —The New York Times

VAMPIR-CUADECUC is a masterpiece... More than a documentary, it is one of the most beautiful films ever made about anything.

         —Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader

VAMPIR-CUADECUC is remarkable... So vivid is Portabella's imagination that the result is best treated as its own original version of the Dracula story.

         —The Arts Desk

Beautiful and intoxicating... VAMPIR-CUADECUC has the power to immerse you in a calming vortex of anti-reality.

         —Bleeding Skull

A fascinating experience... VAMPIR-CUADECUC is a prime candidate for the most surreal making-of documentary ever made.

         —Mondo Digital

It sears into your consciousness... VAMPIR-CUADECUC is a mesmerizingly meta-cinematic vampire story like no other.

         —Filmdaze

Radically inventive... VAMPIR-CUADECUC feels like wandering somewhere between nightmares and waking life.

         —Filmdaze

Portabella is in the pantheon of the greats... VAMPIR-CUADECUC is a remarkable work, elusive and evocative in its imagery.

         —In Review Online

Genuinely otherworldly... VAMPIR-CUADECUC is a profoundly different take on a myth and the filmmaking surrounding it.

         —Eye for Film

This is radical cinema... Surreal, disorienting and foreboding, UMBRACLE is Portabella's shadowy masterpiece.

         —Artforum
