Press Quotes

MC has also issued INSPIRED [BMC CD 228] by the YVES ROBERT [tbn] trio [Cyril Atef- drm, Bruno Chevillon- b]. Robert is an inspired trombonist with excellent control. The 10 mostly originals that make up the program [59:04] range from instant composition to heavy percussion and tabla work to grunting and other unidentified sounds. I would have preferred less attempt at 'exotica' and more free playing from the trio. What is here is well planned with little sense of playing for the sake of making noise. On the last track, which lasts over 10 minutes, someone announces 'you want to get up and dance' and then the trio gets into an irresistible groove for the 6 minutes, similar to what Trever Watts' did with his percussion group. Respectful.

     —Robert Rusch, Cadence Magazine

A trombonist-composer, with broad links to early jazz and roots music through to the avant-garde's use of extended techniques, creates an inspired, forward-looking set of tunes with an unusual trombone-bass-drums trio.

     —Jazzwise

On Inspired, trombonist Yves Robert leads a trio with bassist Bruno Chevillon (like Tchamitchian, a former student of André Jaume) and drummer Cyril Atef, recorded live at Budapest's Opus Jazz Club. Robert and Chevillon bring impeccable tone, touch and technique while Atef adds world-beat bounce and exuberant vocals, resulting in intelligent, adventurous music with a danceable groove. Chevillon's incisive plucks, slaps and harmonics, together with Atef's lively feel on assorted percussion instruments (hand drums, cuíca, shakers), often looped electronically, provide the rhythmic bedrock for Robert's expressive tone, which might ring high like a trumpet, slur across a fast passage, yowl like a cat or chatter through a mute. Especially compelling moments occur on 'Bien dans sa Peau', 'Ideas through Running' and 'Cahutchuca', when the trio collectively accelerates and decelerates over prolonged passages.

—Tom Greenland, The New York City Jazz Record

Like a florid rodeo clown who only reveals the true purpose of his job as a paramedic if necessary, a trombonist's ability to express broad emotions with his horn often masks the instrument's cerebral ability. But without eschewing the brass instruments connective and conceptive role, the trombonists here - a German trombone duo and a French technician leading a bass and drum trio - demonstrate the instrument's sonic elasticity.
